Praying for those with Chemical Addictions
Tuesday Jan 23, 2018
Tuesday Jan 23, 2018
Welcome to the Prayer and Faith Podcast. Today we are praying for a group of people that as a “group” don’t often get a great deal of prayer focus, and that is for addicts or people struggling with chemical additions.
As usual we will begin with our faith builder verse of the day. As a reminder all verses are taken from the ESV or English Standard Version translation of the bible.
Faith Builder Verse
MATTHEW 12:22
And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith.”
Prayer of Thanksgiving
The Lord wants us to enter into his presence with Thanksgiving and Praise. We never want to be remiss in remembering God’s Goodness.
COLOSSIANS 3:16
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
Introduction to Prayer Topic:
People struggling with addictions may be all around us. Yes, it may be the homeless guy on the park bench that reeks of alcohol when you pass by. But there are many more. In the United States alone, according to one website: Over 20 million Americans over the age of 12 have an addiction (excluding tobacco).
Who are these people? The businessman you see at the restraint having lunch could be an alcoholic, who appears to have it all together and looks successful, but is destroying his family. Your elderly neighbor who never used illicit drugs in his life could be hooked on opioids, due to the back problems he had years earlier. Others take heroin, methamphetamines, marijuana and other illicit drugs and are risking their relationships, their finances, their careers, their health, their freedom (due to criminal activity), their health and even their lives because they are hooked on drugs or alcohol.
There are many who have given up hope of being free from the oppression of chemical addiction. But the Lord specializes in setting people free.
John 8:36
So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
Luke 4:18
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
Luke 1:37
For nothing will be impossible with God.”
God is willing to set the captives free. Are you willing to join your faith with others and to believe that the Lord will bring freedom from oppression for those who are suffering from chemical dependency.
Mark 9:23
And Jesus said to him, “‘If you can’! All things are possible for one who believes.”
Mark 11:24
Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.
Matthew 7:7-11
7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. 9 Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? 11 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!
Matthew 18:19
Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven.
Matthew 21:22
And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith.”
In some cases the person may not appear willing to make the change, or to want it yet. However, they are leaving a path of destruction in their wake. We can even ask the Lord to help them to see the truth and to turn their hearts.
Proverbs 21:1
The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord, Like the rivers of water; He turns it wherever He wishes.
Prayer for the Lost
We are going to continue to pray for those who are battling chemical addictions. For this are focus is on those who are lost, that if Chemical dependency takes their lives, will forever be separated from the Lord. We are praying for their salvation as well today. We not only want them freed from the bondage of chemical addiction, but from sin as well. We want them to know the love and Joy of their Heavenly Father.
